Welcome to our blog! We’re Matt and Morgan and we’re currently traveling around the United States in our self-converted Ram Promaster van with our lovable 82-pound chocolate lab Monty. After living and working in Denver while searching for a way to live more intentionally and travel more, we stumbled across two things, almost simultaneously: Minimalism, A Documentary About the Important Things, and #vanlife. A couple of days of nonstop discussion ensued about whether or not we were absolutely bonkers for wanting to pack in good jobs and a lovely life with dear friends, to leave behind the spectacular Rocky Mountains, and live in a van. Nevertheless, we suddenly found ourselves selling all of our things, including our house in Denver. We then set about buying a van, researching conversion guides and what other van lifers had done, and finally quitting our jobs to do our van build. 6 weeks later we were on the open road!
Of course it wasn’t quite that simple, but for us it was 100% the right choice and the universe responded by allowing everything to serendipitously fall into place, down to finding the perfect van on the 4th of July (Independence Day!) and closing on the house right when we wanted to be on the road. It was difficult to leave our friends, community, and an amazing city, but why delay something so wonderful and exciting when everything else is ideal? We love Denver, and so far no place has topped it as a potential place to live — if and when we want to settle down again. Besides, how will we ever know it is the best place for us if we don’t explore everywhere else first? Sometimes you only know what you want by a careful process of elimination.
Along the way, we hope to document our travels on this blog — where we’ve gone, slept, eaten, entertained ourselves, trail run, and exercised Monty. We plan to share our build process, how we converted the van, why we chose to convert it the way we did, problems we encountered, etc. Also, we hope to be honest and transparent about life in a van (spoiler alert: it’s not always glamorous, but it is always amazing). Hopefully, our experiences can serve as a resource to those who are looking to do something similar, inspire others to find new ways to grow, and to be a little more unconvantional in their own lives. If that’s what you’re into!
